Rochestown College 36 Deerpark CBS 24
It was refreshing that a cohort of 6th year students expressed a desire to form a school Basketball team this year and since early September they trained diligently every Friday afternoon. Several years have elapsed since a Basketball team represented Deerpark CBS and with the Rochestown College team littered with Irish internationals, a wiser commander would surely have negotiated a softer return to the arena. Despite hostile odds, the Deerpark boys departed for the suburbs with quiet optimism and Mr. McCarthy’s confidence was justified as a dash of shock and awe in equal measure against their revered opponents threatened to confound the sceptics and rewrite the script.
After a nervous opening, Deerpark found their range led superbly by senior sports star of the year Airidas Vaitkus. With Luke and Dane O’Shea marshalling the defence, Vaitkus was released to orchestrate and often execute the Deerpark offensive manoeuvres. Rochestown were difficult to break down and their ability to rotate a vast squad of players was a feature of the game, as they always appeared to have fresh legs on the court. By comparison, suspensions and injuries reduced Deerpark to a squad of seven options. Despite this numerical disadvantage, scores from Edward McCarthy and Daniel O’Shea kept their side in touch while Nsingi Glodi and Przemyslaw Weiss also chipped in with positive contributions.
Deerpark trailed at half-time but discovered their best form during the penultimate quarter when following a blistering spell of pressure forged a five point lead. As expected, Rochestown responded affirmatively and a late rally in the fourth quarter was enough for them to secure victory. The general consensus from the Deerpark contingent was that the venture back into the Basketball scene was a worthwhile experience and merely sharpened the appetite for more games during the year. Well done to all involved !
